TOWN OF SOUTHWICK, MASS.

The southernmost town in western Massachusetts, Southwick is one of the fastest growing communities in the Bay State, a far cry from its humble beginnings as a rural farming community. On March 15, 1765, fifty-two residents of the southern section of Westfield petitioned to become a separate entity. On Nov. 7, 1770, the south village or “wick” of Westfield was set off as a district, and in 1775, it became a full-fledged town. Early on, it was nicknamed “Poverty Plains” and its first residential home was built on College Highway about a quarter mile north of the current Town Center.

Nestled in the Pioneer Valley with the Congamond Lakes on the southside, the Sodom Mountain range in the west, and plenty of natural beauty in between for activities ranging from motocross and snowmobiling, to hiking, horseback-riding, golfing and boating, Southwick touted itself as a recreational community throughout the late 20th century. Today it is a bedroom community of expensive homes, due in large part to its proximity to Springfield and Hartford, Conn.

Located on the Connecticut River between Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts, the Town of Suffield is proud of its farming heritage. Incorporated as part of Massachusetts in 1674 because of a surveying error, Suffield was settled four years earlier by Col. John Pynchon of Springfield. The town’s 37 pioneering families were forced to flee to Springfield because of heavy fighting between the English and Native Americans during King Philip’s War, but the settlement was re-established in 1677. Suffield seceded from Massachusetts and joined Connecticut in 1749.

A thriving community with a population of 13,555 residents, Suffield is a town rich in contrasts...sweeping fields and farmland, forested hills, a quaint Main Street, retail shopping areas and the Congamond Lakes. While some agricultural lands have given way to housing developments, far-sighted citizens helped purchase property on West Suffield Mountain decades ago. Sunrise Park now offers a lake, hiking trails, and picnic and recreation areas to town residents. Hilltop Farm, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is currently being restored to its former glory.
